PRESS RELEASE - Spotted by Locals surpasses "big 4" travel guide publishers in Europe

Amsterdam, Netherlands - February 21, 2012 -- Today, niche travel guide publisher Spotted by Locals announced it now publishes more Europe city guides than the leading travel guide publishers in the world: Lonely Planet, Rough Guides, Frommer's and Time Out.

In a comparative study of the travel guide's websites, online shops, and mobile app stores, Spotted by Locals calculated the amount of published city guides (e-books, paper guides and mobile app guides) for the "big 4" travel guide publishers in the world:
Lonely Planet: 36
Rough Guides: 25
Time Out: 18
Frommer's: 26
Spotted by Locals: 41

Spotted by Locals was started in 2008 by Sanne & Bart van Poll, two married Amsterdam (Netherlands) locals and travel addicts, because they could not find a travel guide that provided up-to-date and real local information. At this moment, 198 handpicked passionate locals in 41 cities write about their favorite spots in their city, and keep these tips up-to-date. 

Co-founder Bart van Poll: "Before we started Spotted by Locals in 2008, we relied on great travel guides like Lonely Planet, Rough Guides and Time Out. We still often use them for reliable background information of cities we’re visiting. We were amazed to see our company now publishes more city guides of European cities than our big examples do!"

Spotted by Locals plans to continue launching new city guides for Europe cities rapidly over the next few years. Guides are currently available online, as PDF city guides (published every month), and iPhone. In the second quarter of 2012, it plans to launch an Android and Windows 7 Phone version of its city guide apps.
